In assuring your child's successful development, we are sure to avoid certain activities that would be inappropriate and inhibiting on the development of your three or four year old.
Cognitive Development
We don’t want to discourage kids by giving them too difficult of mental operations that they are biologically and cognitively not ready to perform. Such examples that might generate low-self esteem in their own merits and abilities are problems that include concrete and formal operation thinking (if 4+8=12, then 12-4=8; solving problems in head). Also, papers/extensive writing assignments and assessments over extensive memorization would be inappropriate. Finally, teachers should work to avoid interruption from classmates when another classmate is talking. Such behavior would discourage curiosity and expression of ideas.
Social and Emotional Development
Disobedience to the rules and disrespect towards both the teacher and classmates is inappropriate because it does not help cultivate self-control and self-concept/self-esteem in others if they are being disrespected. Kids who continue to show disobedience or disrespect after a friendly reminder to change their behavior will sit in time-out. Respect also encompasses cooperating fairly in assignments, activities, and games. Inappropriate activities that encourage such inappropriate behaviors include rough-housing and fighting. Both activities will not be tolerated.
Motor and Physical Development
In a classroom, it would be inappropriate to see every child's motor and physical developments as the same. Caregivers and teachers must understand gender diversity in motor play. Giving boys and girls the same opportunities but the teacher must adjust accordingly. It would be very inappropriate to ignore children who might have physical challenging conditions and teachers need to mindful and adjust accordingly to these challenges. It would also be incorrect to have activities where children sit out and don't participate the whole time. Children need to be moving all the time while playing these games. Games like musical chairs where they would have to sit out need to be rearranged to give children all they playing time they can have.
